The Mothman Prophecies was not the first book to inflate the Mothman legend, however. The MIB were popularized in Gray Barker's 1956 book They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers. Almost certainly the Bender and Jarrold matters would have passed into obscurity if not for They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers, the book Barker would write two years Later. Barker contacted Bender and wrote up his findings in his book They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers (1956) which, in Keith's words, "launched the modern day MIB tempest". It was a promising idea, but short-lived: the second and last entry in the series was Gray Barker's They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers. His investigations led to the publication of his best selling book, “They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers.” SHADES OF GRAY peels the layers away of one of the great American hoaxers of the twentieth century. Bender's account was featured in They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers, a book by IFSB associate Gray Barker, who also mentioned it frequently in his magazine, The Saucerian. The French title is La Prophétie des Ombres (The Shadow Prophecy). Then he read Gray Barker's controversial 1956 book, They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers, which introduced the so-called Men in Black phenomenon to much of America.
